Team History

Arsenal Football Club, founded in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, London, began as Dial Square before becoming Royal Arsenal, then Woolwich Arsenal in 1893, and finally Arsenal in 1914. It was the first southern club to join the Football League in 1893, reaching the First Division in 1904. Relegated once in 1913, Arsenal has since maintained the longest unbroken run in England’s top flight.

The club moved to Highbury in 1913, boosting its profile, and under Herbert Chapman in the 1920s-30s, it became a powerhouse, winning five league titles and two FA Cups with innovative tactics and signings. Post-war, under Tom Whittaker, Arsenal added two more leagues and an FA Cup, but success waned until Bertie Mee’s 1970-71 League and FA Cup double. George Graham’s era (1986-95) brought two league titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Cup Winners’ Cup (1994).

Arsène Wenger’s tenure (1996-2018) transformed Arsenal, delivering three Premier League titles (1997-98, 2001-02, 2003-04), including the unbeaten “Invincibles” season of 2003-04, and four FA Cups. The 2006 move to Emirates Stadium increased revenue but initially limited spending, leading to a trophy drought until FA Cup wins in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2020. Mikel Arteta, manager since 2019, won the 2020 FA Cup and has rebuilt Arsenal into title contenders, finishing second in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Arsenals 13 league titles, record 14 FA Cups, two League Cups, one Cup Winners’ Cup, one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and 17 Community Shields make it England’s third-most successful club. Its 2003-04 unbeaten season remains unmatched in modern English football. The club’s rivalries, notably with Tottenham Hotspur, and iconic players like Thierry Henry (record 228 goals), Dennis Bergkamp, and Tony Adams define its legacy.
